The Real Me – Poem

Why can’t I have this love

I’ve wanted all my life,

Something I was told

I could not have –

A lover of my soul –

A soul mate?

I’ve lived this long.

Haven’t I done enough,

Learned enough lessons

To, finally, be rewarded,

In these last years

To have someone

Who loves me,

Flaws and all,

The real me?

I’ve always held back,

Who and what

I truely am.

I thought that I  found

A love that is true,

Only to discover

He lied,

At the deepest level.

I trusted him

With the real me

Only to hear him say,

“I wish you wouldn’t have told me that!”

It hurt

The real me.
